10 september 2023

On September 8, police officers contacted Diana Saparkyzy's lawyer and informed that they would conduct a pre-trial investigation under Article 158 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Obstruction of the legitimate professional activity of a journalist) in connection with the attack of security guards of ArcelorMittal Temirtau on a journalist.

The next day, Diana and her lawyer went to Shakhtinsk, filed a corresponding application and received a resolution recognizing Diana Saparkyzy as a victim in the case.

Adil Soz will continue to monitor the development of the situation and provide legal assistance and support to Diana Saparkyzy.

On August 18, the editorial office of the KazTAG news agency reported the attack on its own correspondent for the Karaganda region Diana Saparkyzy. The journalist covered the situation at the Kazakhstanskaya mine of the ArcelorMittal Temirtau company, where three miners died in a fire. An unknown man, who later turned out to be a security guard of the company, took the journalist's phone and deleted some files. Diana managed to capture the attacker on video. At the same time, he did not even try to hide his face.

Adil Soz has published an Open Appeal to the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Kazakhstan Berik Asylov, stating the need to take measures of the prosecutor's response to restore the rule of law.

The international human rights organization Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has also previously demanded a thorough investigation into the attack on journalist Diana Saparkyzy.
